Three people fell into the freezing waters of Lake Monroe last Thursday while ice fishing according to police. Emergency crews said their arrival to the scene was delayed due to a large gravel pile blocking one of only 2 roads to the lake. The chief of the Marshalls Creek Fire Company said the emergency crew could've been there in 5 minutes instead of 15 minutes -- when it comes to hypothermia it can only take a matter of seconds between life and death. Lake residents believe the road is their private property, and they have a right to block the road. Residents sat on the gravel pile as crews tried to remove it after the lake rescue. They want to keep the road closed off so that it doesn't become a busy through-way for local traffic. A month previous to this lake rescue, the fire chief wrote a letter to the residents demanding the gravel pile be removed. The fire company has been fighting over this issue for quite some time, knowing that un-necessary extra steps would be needed when it came to emergencies. These extra steps could lead to a tragedy instead of a successful rescue for any kind of emergency in the area. State police have not released the names or the conditions of the people rescued from the lake. |
