The man who fatally shot 3 of his German-shepherd mix dogs was found not guilty of animal cruelty charges. Arnold Wheeler said he did not want them anymore, and claimed that he couldn't find any other way to get rid of the animals. Wheeler was however convicted of improper disposal and charged with a $200 fine. He was also sentenced to serve 30 days in the Monroe County Correctional Facility, which he begins serving next month. The law clearly states that you are in fact allowed to shoot your dogs in order to put them down. Shouldn't there also be a law that states you need a valid reason in order to put your pet down (such as illness/disease/old age)? If there was, how would that be enforced? How would officials be able to tell if the dog owner had a valid reason? |

Families stood in line for Section 8 vouchers yesterday at the University Center of ESU yesterday. Section 8 vouchers provide families with greatly reduced rent. Its federally funded and pays private landlords a portion of the rent to house low income tenants. Hundreds of regular families, with both parents working 2 or 3 jobs fulltime, stood in line with their applications. Some of these families have been living in basements or tents, doing everything they can to provide for their children. Within the first hour roughly 128 applicants were received, and hundreds more applied throughout the day. |
